Waggoner's Word - September 29, 2016

Waggoner’s Word:  WHAT’S HAPPENING IN THE HIVE

Hopewell Parents:
It has been a fun and challenging week at Hopewell:
Pep Rally Fun-- Ask your students about our Wednesday Pep Rally.  School spirit was bouncing off the rafters thanks to our cheerleaders, dancers, and band!
Hundreds of flu shots were administered on Thursday.
And with the 1st Six weeks grading period ending tomorrow (9/30), teachers and students are hard at work making sure all assignments are turned in, tests completed, and retakes finished.  Whew!!
Picture day is tomorrow, 9/30.
Have a great weekend,
Rebecca Haynes, Interim Principal
KEEPING IT SAFE WITH SRO HARPER-HILL:
BIKES:  Recently we had a bike stolen from the bike racks.  I have noticed that some students leave their bikes unlocked.  Please encourage your student to lock his/her bike so that we can decrease the incidence of bike theft and make our school grounds safer.

Cyber Security  Please see attached link of the Cyber Security Presentation, presented by our SRO, Harper-Hill. Your student attended this presentation during grade level assemblies this past Monday. We want to make sure our community is informed of the issues we are seeing on our campus and educate our students, parents, and staff. Things highlighted in RED were the key points presented. Please take the time to view the presentation and have a conversation with your student about Cyber Security. Thanks for your help!

COUNSELOR’S CORNER
Would your student like to earn high school credit early?
If your student knows a language other than English, he/she may be eligible to take the AAPPL test to potentially earn high school credit in Foreign Languages.  Foreign Language tests offered to Middle School students are: Arabic, French, German, Mandarin Chinese Traditional, Mandarin Chinese Simplified, Portuguese, Russian, and Spanish.
The AAPPL test or the Assessment of Performance toward Proficiency in Languages is an online, self-paced test that will measure your proficiency in a language other than English in four different areas: reading, listening, speaking and writing.  Depending on the student’s results on this test, your student may receive high school credit and also be placed in higher-level LOTE courses, if offered.
If you think you would benefit from this test and/or would like further details, please contact Ms. Galindo in the counseling office at Maricela_galindo@roundrockisd.org.  All students interested in taking the AAPPL test must have a “Consent for Testing Form” signed by a parent or guardian and returned to the Ms. Galindo by November 16, 2016. These forms can be also found on the Hopewell Middle School Counselor’s website.  Testing will take place on December 1st and December 2nd.

Hello Hopewell Families!
I'm still here!  I will be here at least through next week and very possibly longer. Please give me a call if you have questions or concerns.
This week and next, during advisory periods, your students will see videos and learn more about how to avoid cyber-bullying, and about how to stay in compliance with acceptable technology use laws and policies.  Ask them about what they are learning!
Coffee with the Principal (Principal Open Forum):  Have questions about your child's school?  Concerns? Ideas to share?  I will be scheduling some opportunities for parents/guardians to join me for open conversations.  Informal.  No agenda.  Just conversation.  Come have a cup of coffee and let's talk!  Our first Coffee with the Principal will be on Friday, October 14, from 8 AM-9:30 AM, in the Lecture Hall.  Join me!

Have a great weekend!

REMINDER OF HOPEWELL STUDENT CELL PHONE/ELECTRONICs POLICY:
This is a reminder that we are requiring ALL students to have their cell phones turned off and put away from the time they enter the building in the morning until dismissal at 3:30.  Students may use their phones during lunch periods to play games and listen to music or when a teacher allows it for instructional purposes such as research using the internet.  Please do not call or text your child during instructional hours.  If you need to get a hold of them or get them a message, please call the main office at: 512-464-5200.

Texas Penal Code 21.15 - WITH REGARD TO ELECTRONIC DEVICE/CELL PHONES
Due to the above Penal Code, Hopewell students will not be allowed to have their cell phones out in RESTROOMS, LOCKER ROOMS, OR CHANGING AREAS. Phones need to be inaccessible in these areas. If a student has their phone out in these areas (RESTROOM/LOCKER ROOM/DRESSING AREAS) the phone will be confiscated and the parent will have to come pick up the phone from the front office.

PTA REFLECTIONS 2016-2017
WHAT IS YOUR STORY? Students may submit entries only through a PTA or PTSA in good standing (membership dues paid). NEW & IMPORTANT DETAIL this year: Parent of and /or student entering Reflections must be a PTA member! Each entry should be the work of ONE student. They may submit more than one entry in any or all art categories: Visual Arts, Literature, Photography, Musical Composition, Film Production, &/or Dance Choreography.

HOPEWELL LOCKER & BACKPACK POLICY
Every student has been assigned a locker. Students are also allowed to carry backpacks throughout the day.

STUDENT AGENDAS
All 6th and 7th-grade students are required to have an agenda to write down assignments, due dates, and keep organized. Agendas can be purchased in the front office for $7.00. Students who are eligible for free and reduced lunch may purchase an agenda for a reduced price of $3.00. Agendas are optional for 8th graders. Parents may purchase agendas elsewhere but it is highly suggested that students have the agenda created specific for Hopewell with reminders of school policies and expectations.

PARENT PICK-UP/DROP OFF & BUS LANE
This is a reminder that parent pick up and drop off is on the south side of the building between 7:50 am - 8:20 am. Please do not drop off or pick up students in the bus lane or the front of the building in the fire lane. This is for the safety of our students.
Students with large band instruments (bass, cello, tuba, etc.) can be dropped off at the band hall entrance. After school, all students must exit through the parent pick up area (south side of building) or near the bus lane. Students are not to exit through the front doors of the school.
