Some observations/reflections:
  1. In Math, this is one of the highest scores we’ve had for 8th grade in the past several years. 100% of the 85 7th grade accelerated students that took the 8th grade math test met standard.  We are especially proud of our Special Education students who scored exceptionally well as did our Hispanic student subpopulation.  They scored the highest of any student group at Hopewell!! Our Economically Disadvantaged students rocked it too! We’re proud of all our students who took the STAAR and of our exceptional math teachers for preparing them.
  2. In Reading, we were only one % point away from 90% of our students meeting standard.  That is incredible!  Our scores continue to go in the right direction and that is due to our great students and hard working teachers. We are especially proud of our Special Education students and teachers as they scored towards the top in RRISD and a huge jump from last school year.
  3. We have moved away from departmentalization of our core subjects and structured our students into smaller learning communities or TEAMS.  This has made a significant impact on the behavioral and academic needs of our students.  Teachers collaborate in TEAM meetings each week and develop strategies to help struggling students be more successful in their learning and behavior choices.  It is truly making a difference.
  4. We also are now requiring our grade level core academic department teachers to meet twice per week to develop engaging lessons that are relevant to the real world to help anchor the learning targets taught.  They also analyze Testing data to help determine what learning targets need more remediation.  That too is making a huge difference in our student achievement.
  5. We have RRISD Instructional Coaches that work closely with our core teachers in their Professional Learning Communities on a weekly basis.  This too is making a difference.
  6. Those students that did not meet standard of passing in math and reading will be tutored during their regular Language Arts class or moved to a Math Intervention class for the remainder of the school year. We will rework some of those objectives that they struggled with on STAAR and get them ready for the re-take in a several weeks.
ORCHESTRA SOLO ENSEMBLE
On Saturday, April 16th over 100 orchestra students received superior ratings for Solo and Ensemble Contest.  These students worked hard to prepare for the competition and did Hopewell proud!
FLU BUG ABOUT!
It's hard to believe we are at the end of April and are still getting confirmed flu cases.   We urge all of our students and staff to take extra precautions in order to decrease their risk of getting the flu. Remember to cover your cough and sneeze with your arm, and protect your immune system by eating a balanced diet and getting plenty of rest. Above all, I cannot stress enough, the importance of hand washing. Please continue to inform us of any confirmed flu results from your doctor. Thank you!

We need three people to help with the process.  The reconciliation will take place in the second week of July and take approximately 2-3 hours.  If you can help with this process, please email our President, Joanne Georgeson at hopewellptapresident@gmail.com.

HOPEWELL HONOR BAND PERFORMED IN DALLAS FRIDAY, APRIL 15TH:
The Hopewell Honor Band under the Direction of Kevin Crawford and Sharon Walker performed Friday in Dallas at the Meyerson Symphony Center.  They were privileged to learn from the Education Director for the Dallas Symphony at a clinic he gave prior to their performance. I asked several of the students what they thought of that clinic and little tidbits of information and they ALL said the advice and critique of their band was very helpful.  The band took the massive stage at2:00PM and performed three of their pieces.  I can’t tell you how beautiful and crisp they sounded in the exquisite facility.  What a terrific experience for our young blooming musicians to have that opportunity to learn and perform at one of the finest facilities around.  They made a great memory Friday and so did the parent chaperones and our directors.

HOPEWELL MS STUDENT HONORED BY THE NATIONAL SOCIETY DAUGHTERS OF THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION:
On Saturday, April 9th, the Daniel Coleman Chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution announced Hopewell 8th grade student, Kayley Brown, as the chapter winner of this year's American History Essay Contest. She researched the Stamp Act and wrote an essay titled "A Colonial Family's Reaction to the Stamp Act." They recognized her at their monthly meeting and awarded her a certificate. Kayley currently serves as chapter president of Hopewell's Junior Historians club.

The board meetings they will be invited to will be on April 21st & May 19th at7PM.  This is a HUGE honor and one that is celebrated at Hopewell MS and RRISD.  A very special thanks goes out to Ron Goins, Heather Byrd, Jessica Listi and Jennifer Lovejoy our teacher sponsors for all their hard work with this incredible organization.  Great going students and sponsors!

ELECTIONS FOR PTA
WE NEED YOU! Hopewell PTA has elections coming up in May to elect the Executive Board for our PTA.  We need nominations for the positions of President, Vice President, Secretary and Treasurer!

Do you love to represent and promote?  You could be President, support and honor our school within the community and school environment, maintain our existing programs and liaise with the Principal and the Board to share new and exciting ideas.  Are you creative as well as organized?  Have a few hours a week to spare?  WE NEED You!

Could you support the President in their role, follow up on tasks assigned to you in a timely manner, maybe you're interested in changing up the Spirit wear at school?  Or supporting someone with Teacher Appreciation?  WE NEED YOU!

Are you an attention to detail person?  Then maybe Secretary is for you, attend a meeting once a month and take the minutes, type them up and circulate them to all Board Members.  Take them manually or bring a laptop and type away during the meeting - it's up to you but WE NEED YOU!

Good with money, happy to 'cook the books' (in an honest way of course)?  Oversee all spending on the PTA (while working within a pre-set budget) and report on our financial situation monthly, then WE NEED YOU!

Please email Kelly at
hopeandfaith2@msn.com or Joanne at joanne@georgesons.net for more information or just to ask us a question and remember WE NEED YOU!

HOPEWELL JUNIOR HISTORIANS GOOD NEWS:
Congratulations Team Hopewell! I am so excited to hear that our Hopewell Junior Historian officers are going to get well-deserved district recognition for their hard work.  What follows are some questions and answers from sponsor Jennifer Lovejoy regarding this important recognition.
What did the students have to do to reach the state finals? Once the kids decided on a topic, the officers set up a date to go to the Williamson Museum to do preliminary research.  This year, not only did they spend a half-day (Saturday) doing this, but they also took a tour of the courthouse where the trial actually occurred.  They the use primary and secondary resources to complete their research, on both their own time and club time (Fridays after school).  They have to write a process paper, delineating the steps they went through to make the project.  They also have to design the board, what goes on the board, and a bibliography.  The kids worked with the school's woodshop and Engineering teacher to construct the board. Once the board was completed, they went to the Cen-Tex Regional History Day Fair (Austin this year).  They went up against all middle schools in the Central Texas area (who had a group project), and they won second place.  (First and second place go to state.)  The students get a ton of feedback about their project, so that they can improve it before state competition.  (That is what they have been working on for the last five weeks or so... including over their Spring Break.) This weekend, April 2nd, the kids will show their project at the Texas State Historical Association Annual History Day Fair.  From there, they will have a few more weeks to make any final changes, using judges feedback again, to the project before it goes to state on April 30th at the Bob Bullock Museum.  At state, they are up against all middle schools in the state of Texas.  If they get first or second place, they are eligible to go to the National History Day fair in Washington, D.C., where they would compete against projects all over the nation.  (This is our first year to compete, so I am not expecting us to go that far.)  I am tremendously proud of our kiddos.  Our club officers have put so much effort into this project, I am truly amazed. They have done our club proud.
What do you mean by exhibit? What was the exhibit? Their exhibit is a three-dimensional board four feet tall by (roughly) six feet wide.  On it they place all of the research they have done.  They have primary source photographs and short passages that tell the "story". This year, the kids did their research on "The First Successful Prosecution of the KKK", which was spearheaded by Dan Moody, who later became Governor of Texas.  The trial occurred right here in Williamson County at the Georgetown Courthouse.  (I will send you a photo of our board when the kids are done re-working it.)
How long did students work on the exhibit? The students start deciding what their chapter project (done by our officers this year) in the first couple of meetings in the school year.  The rules state that you can't start on it before that.
What are the exhibits judged on? The exhibits are judged on historical quality (60%), relation to the theme (20%) - every year the National History Day announces a new topic, clarity of presentation (20%), and rules compliance.  The Junior Historian Club sponsors cannot work on the project; we can only offer guidance.  So, the kids arrive at the venue, set up their process paper, bibliography, and exhibit. They are also interviewed by the judges, who can ask them any questions they want about the project, construction, and/or process. There are also special awards that our kids are eligible for.  This year, they won the research award at Cen-Tex, the regional competition. The award was given by Locke Lord LLP and is called the Legal History Award.  The kids were awarded this for "outstanding achievement in the National History Day Program 2016 Cen-Tex Regional History Fair".  They are up for a similar award at state.
