HOW TO HELP YOUR CHILD WITH SCHOOL WORK?  THE ACCOUNTABLE HOUR:
A former colleague of mine during my tenure in Eanes ISD wrote up some suggestions for parents regarding ways they can help their child at home to be more successful in school.  I would like to share it with you all and hope that it will provide some help, ideas, and support for you as a Hopewell parent

THE ACCOUNTABLE HOUR
One of the questions parents most frequently ask teachers is, “What can I do at home to help my child?”  Ideally all parents want to provide a supportive and enriching environment for their children.  Realistically, parents are over-worked and struggling to keep up with family, home, job - modern life in general.  In spite of the fast-paced way we live, it is a parent’s responsibility to encourage the sense of duty and accomplishment that results from successfully completing homework.  This is possible and can be achieved by a child’s devotion to study for one hour each evening - not an unstructured hour, not a supervised hour, but an accountable hour.
The purpose of homework is threefold:  1) to lead a child to think and work independently,   2) to reinforce recently accumulated knowledge,  3) and to apply learning to the context of life.  By providing a place for study, assisting with the time frame, and using appropriate praise, parents can help a child establish good habits.
How is this possible?   First, include the child in the problem-solving process of determining time for homework.  Most younger children will not be able to attend to a task for an uninterrupted hour.  The two of you can work out four 15 minute segments or three 20 minute segments, for example.   Have the child tell you what will be attempted in a block of time.  Use a kitchen timer.  When time is up, look at the assignment, check for completion, not accuracy, and, most importantly, have the child explain the operation, concept, or process related to the assignment.   Understanding precedes explanation.   If the student is working on a particularly difficult concept, it may take several attempts and several practice sessions before the child reaches understanding.  Recognize and appreciate the attempts, keep praise specific and brief, and avoid threats and promises.  The latter will only weaken your position.  Tokens or stickers on a calendar are good visible rewards.
The student who is disorganized, unmotivated, or forgetful needs the structured system and the sense of accomplishment that come from following through with tasks.  The parents’ resolve must be strong.  After all, parents are trying to establish noble goals - the values of self-discipline, good work habits, and a love of learning.
Following are examples of the accountable hour in specific subject areas:
social studies - If a child has to read a chapter in a textbook, the parent might ask for a brief summary of what has been read.  An atlas nearby would help parent and child find places on the map that were mentioned in the reading.  The student should attempt to pronounce the names and key words.  In addition, the child should be able to explain how that particular reading assignment fits in with the unit of study.
Math - Homework in math focuses on drill, practice and application of one concept.  Have the child explain the concept and the steps involved.
Language Arts - If  the assignment is a written paper, ask the child to read the paper to you.  Reading aloud will often call attention to mistakes in the paper.  Talk about the purpose of the paper and ask the child to explain the approach.  Call attention to good use of vocabulary and have a thesaurus nearby if one is needed.
Science - Science study guides contain specialized vocabulary and sequential information.  Again, make sure the child is able to pronounce the words and to make an attempt to explain procedures, concepts, cycles, or processes.   The student should go over science each evening because of the technical material.  It is helpful to have a tablet handy for the child to sketch a diagram during the explanation.
If the child has no homework on a particular evening, the parent should insist on the structure of the accountable hour.  Have the student read a book and talk about the characters; why they behaved the way they did, who they remind the child of, or how the child would have handled the situation.  The student could draw a picture of a favorite part of the plot or an interpretation of the setting.  This would also be an excellent time to read and react to different articles in the newspaper.
Television viewing is even acceptable if the child assumes a participating role.  After viewing a 30 minute show, a child could jot down cause/effect examples, sequence the plot, or rewrite the ending.  The student could also comment on the commercials.  What is the purpose?  Why are only good things mentioned?  What technique is being used to convince the public?
The benefits of this specialized hour are worth the effort it takes to establish and maintain.  The child becomes an active rather than passive learner, feels accountable for the work, builds a foundation on how to learn, develops thinking skills, and hopefully establishes the habit of lifelong learning.

6th GRADE MOVIE NIGHT RE-CAP:
It was an incredible turnout for last Friday night’s 6th grade WEB sponsored movie lock-in night here at Hopewell MS.  The overwhelming turnout was certainly a challenge for the WEB leaders and sponsors but with 2/3 of the 6th grade class showing, it was a huge success!  Managing that many 6th graders for a movie night kept everyone on their toes but the students hopefully had a good time hanging out with their friends.   We will make a few changes for next year’s event to make it an even better one for our 6th graders and WEB leaders.  Thanks, 6th grade parents for your support.

I AM THAT GIRL CLUB MEETING TUESDAY, DECEMBER 1ST FROM 3:30-4:30pm IN THE LECTURE HALL:
This all girls club at Hopewell was inspired by our guest speaker Alexis Jones who spoke to our girls last year helping our young girls empower themselves to gain confidence in themselves and ignore the media who defines what beauty is.  Please check out Twitter and these two websites for more information on Alexis Jones and her mission for our girls: Twitter@ iamthatgirl,www.alexisjones.com  or www.iamthatgirl.com for more information on this powerful movement.  The IMTG club will an agenda each meeting and will focus on a different social, academic or emotional challenge facing our girls today.  They will discuss that topic under the supervision of our teacher sponsor, Monica Baldini to help them navigate through adolescence with a some support from their peers.  You may email Mrs. Baldini at: monica_baldini@roundrockisd.org for any additional questions regarding this club.

TI 83 CALCULATOR APP AVAILABLE FOR ANDROID AND APPLE SMART PHONES:
Check out these apps for both the Android and iPhone smart phones that have the same capabilities that the TI 83 calculators needed for Algebra and Geometry have.   The Android app called Wabbitemu is free while the iPhone app is $5.99 called GrafNCalc83.  It’s a HUGE savings from the cost of the actual calculator.   Thank you Kristina Moyer our Algebra and Geometry teacher for giving us this great tip!

NATIONAL JUNIOR HONOR SOCIETY INDUCTION FOR CURRENT HOPEWELL 8TH GRADERS:
The NJHS induction ceremony for our current 8th graders will be held at 7PM on Tuesday, December 1st at 7PM in the cafeteria.  NJHS qualifying students will be gathering at 6:30PM in the Lecture Hall.  ALL parents and guests will be seated in the cafeteria beginning at 6:30PM.  Thank you Kelsey Roach, 8th grade Language Arts teacher and new NJHS Sponsor for her hard work getting this important program organized and reset for this school year.  This is a very special event for these deserving students.   Later in the spring, we will have another induction for our current 7th graders for the following school year.

Is Your Child on the Basketball Team?
Concessions are offered at the Girls and Boys Basketball games so that
children and parents can snack or even dine during the busy evening

duration of a game.

If you have a child playing A Team you could cover the shift while B Team
is playing and then still watch your child's team game.  This would be a
great help to Concessions and a great way to be a team player and support
the team and Hopewell Middle School as a whole.

Have an incredible Thanksgiving with your family and friends!
We ALL have so much to be thankful for.

VETERANS DAY VIDEO: COPY THE LINK TO YOUR BROWSER THEN WATCH OUR INCREDIBLE ASSEMBLYhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D-V2Zf7OeZo
A VERY special thank you to our incredible Hopewell Student Council for putting on one of the best Veterans Day Assemblies I have ever witnessed or have been a part of.  Ms. Alvarez and Mrs. McCray are our Student Council sponsors and their leadership with this event contributed greatly to this success.  Our student council officers spoke and introduced our guest speaker Captain George C. Strable Jr., Commander 249th Transportation C Company 36th Infantry Division US Army.  Our band, orchestra, choir and dance programs all performed patriotic pieces and our student body was an amazing audience.  Putting together 1,000 middle school students in one space requiring attentive, respectful engagement can be a risky venture.  However, we taught and stated our expectations for assembly behavior beforehand, secured a great program and speaker, and our students totally rose to the occasion.  We were all very proud of them and we reinforced that once they returned back to their classrooms.  Middle school students are never perfect souls and are always pushing boundaries in order to help them find and understand themselves.  That’s certainly normal middle school student behavior and we have that in perfect perspective as teachers and administrators at Hopewell MS.  Today, they proved that there is hope for our future with this terrific, diverse, intelligent, and spunky student body!  I believe that our Hornets learned a great deal of what it means to be an American on Veterans Day.

6th GRADE WEB MOVIE LOCK IN FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 13TH FROM 7-10 PM
This Friday night November 13th, we will have an incredible event for our 6th graders to help them become more connected to Hopewell school life.  As you know, we will be having a Movie Lock In beginning at 7 PM and ending at 10 PM for our 6th graders led by our 8th_ grade WEB leaders and teacher sponsors.  The event will include some fun team building games along with a movie and popcorn!  The Concession stand will be open for business to please send money with your child to the Movie Lock In. Admission is free and students will be required to have their school ID to get in the door!  Please make sure that your children are picked up at 10 PM.  Thanks!

10 TRUTHS MIDDLE SCHOOLERS SHOULD KNOW:
Copy the link below to your browser and read an interesting article on the middle school aged student.  Great stuff.  One of our PTA members sent this to me and is certainly worth reading.

If you have a child playing A Team you could cover the shift while B Team is playing and then still watch your child's team game.  This would be a great help to Concessions and a great way to be a team player and support the team and Hopewell School as a whole.  Thanks for Supporting the HMS PTA. Watch this space for future fundraising events to help out the school and PTA.

SHOPAROO!
We are almost to 50,000 Room points = $100.00  KEEP on snapping those receipts - the more you snap the more we earn.  Smaller amount receipts gets us MORE than one big amount receipt.  Thank you to our 63 supporters ...... we would LOVE to have MORE !!!! This month we can earn 2 sweepstakes entry for every non grocery bill.  So snap ALL those receipts and let SHOPAROO do the work.
Hopewell’s Partners in PE class is the best!
This is a reverse inclusion class.  During this time eighth grade regular education students “partners” come, and are role models, peer mentors, and friends with our FAC students.  This class participates in many sport units such as bowling, volleyball, fitness activities, basketball, but most of all they love to dance!
In addition, they are involved in Special Olympics as athletes and volunteers.  One of the upcoming events the students will be competing in is the Area 13 Bowling Competition.  This will be held in Austin November 6th – 8th

Hope everyone has a great weekend!
Stay dry!
